 Brother, Dear Brother

Brother, Dear Brother

Misonoo Nanako, a new student at Seiran, an exclusive and beautiful all-girls' school, is excited about starting a new year with her best friend, Tomoko. Things don't start out great, however. In fact, Nanako almost misses getting off the bus, yet she is saved by a tall, thin, blonde lady known as Saint Juste. Almost as soon as she enters the school, Nanako finds herself the target of another young lady by the name of Shinobu Mariko, who wants two things--to join the Sorority, and become Nanako's best, and only, friend. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to say that practically everybody wants to join the Sorority--the only exception being the athletic, kind, and popular Kaoru no Kimi, who severely disapproves of the Sorority's leader, Miya-sama. Miya-sama, leader of the student body as well as the Sorority, wields incredible power over practically all, especially Saint Juste, who seems trapped within her magical "spell." And when Miya-sama sets her sights upon Nanako, any chance of a so-called "normal" school year is ruined for Nanako.       - Sakura Josei

Comments When I saw the first episode of Brother, Dear Brother, I was a bit skeptical. The art was very different from a lot of the anime I have seen, and the characters were somewhat unusual. But as I advanced to the other episodes, the series left me totally mesmerized and astonished. The plot is very addictive and unique. There's really no bloody action here. Most of the scenery is dark and melancholy and there is LOTS of symbolism. There are parts where the series can be confusing, perhaps disturbing, but it only makes the story much more interesting. I couldn't make general assumptions when I viewed this anime...I was always surprised after every episode. I sometimes had to re-watch an episode so I could make a good guess on what the next underlying mystery was (I love that!). Almost all the characters have a critical flaw within, and I felt sorry for some of them. I highly recommend this title to any shoujo fan who loves drama. It's definitely become one of top animes I've seen all time. All right. I'll be pefectly honest and admit this off the bat. I simply LOVE this anime. The entire design, composed primarily of beautiful shadows and still shots, is enough to take your breath away. The only problem in that respect is that at times the motion seems stilted and "blurry". Otherwise, it's positively beautiful!

Brother, Dear Brother is the shoujo lover's shoujo series, yet the story isn't all neat and happy and innocent. Indeed, the characters can be positively frightening at times. Yet everybody has a reason for doing what they do, and that is what I truly love about this series. The characterization. At first, the characters might seem one dimensional. But watch for a bit, and you discover more and more about them. When I first watched it, I was positive I knew exactly what the characters meant. Then I watched another episode, and watched my entire viewpoint crumble in the wake of the new information.

While there might not be mecha and pointless fighting, there is a plethora of jealousy, revenge, posessiveness, suicide, abuse, illness...I'd argue that the emotional intensity of several episodes is unparalleled, and I personally have shuddered whilst watching this. I've seen a lot of anime, but nothing has made me more terrified than the deranged actions of Saint Juste in episodes 13-14 or Miya-sama in episode 22. Truly brilliant and terrifying.

The artistry is realistic, but doesn't follow the regular trend of the cutesy stuff. So it's a bit unusual, but still good. The plot is very interesting. There's a lot of twists and turns that leaves you with endless questions. The one thing that really got me was the lack of male characters in the anime. I swear they're lesbians, but then it was never stated straight out, so I have no freaking idea. All I know is I was glued to my seat (besides the peeing part)cuz I wanted to know what in the world is going on. I still don't know! I say it's a good flick to watch, but if you're not into weird stuff, go watch your pokemon and sailormoon.
