REVIEW of:
 End of Evangelion

End of Evangelion      The third impact occurs and mankind is going to be eradicated. The only thing that stands between total obliteration is a lone figure, Shinji Ikari. The final showdown between two forces who want to control the third impact, Seele and Nerv begins. Keel Lorentz, with Seele, the SSDF and Eva units 5-13 plans to destroy Nerv and it's two surviving evangelions (units 1 and 2) and using their evas to make contact with Lilith, who rests crucified under Nerv HQ. Gendo Ikari, who controls Nerv, plans to use Rei Ayanami, a clone of Lilith and his wife Yui Ikari, to create the third impact in order to finally meet Yui again. In the mist of destruction, Unit 1 awakes and calls upon the lance of longinus which rests in lunar orbit and the third impact begins. The future of mankind rests in the mind of Shinki Ikari who is choosen by Rei Ayanami (Lilith) to determine the future of mankind. Should Shinji choose solitude, mankind shall be eradicated. Should Shinji choose reality, mankind shall return.

This movie replaces the original endings (episodes 25 and 26) of the series Neon Genesis Evangelion. The original series starts the ball rolling and skipping its original ending and together with the new ending makes the series whole and complete. This is a A rated anime which is worth collecting and watching many times over.        - Maather1

Comments This movie was both a turn on and a turn off when I first saw it at an unofficial meeting of my campuses anime club. The artistry was superbly done and I admired the movements made by the characters, mechas, and vehicles. The character designs and the designs of the Evas were splendidly carried over into the movie. But the part that turned me off was the confusing real life footage which was disorienting to me visually and in trying to keep up with the storyline. When I watched End of Eva I had not seen the series and was utterly lost. However, after seeing the series I realize that this was a much better end than what the series was origanally given. The plot had lost me because it was meant to replace the last two episodes of a series I had never seen. I did find it interesting when classical music was played during one of the most grusome scenes I had ever seen in a show. However, I don't think I will ever get over the initial confusion of watching End of Eva for the first time.

Overall: 6 (Great but Huh?)
About character development: It is hard to see character development in this movie because it sums the entire t.v. series. If considering the entire series, this would be a 8. But if you consider just watching this movie and not the series, this would be a 0.

I really liked this version of the ending to Neon Genesis Evangelion. It sure beats the crap out of the original endings. The art is superb and in some scenes even better than the TV series. If not because the movie was dark and gloomy, I would give the art probably a 9 or 9+. I gave the clarity and plot high points because I compared it to the original ending of the TV series. Although it explains a lot, it still miss some explainations. The only down side to the movie is it is rather dark and gloomy. Nope, I have tried the contrast and the brightness on my TV but it is not it. The reason is because it wasn't released for TV in Japan. This was showed in a theatre. With the dark environment in a theatre, the brightness was correct. Unfortunately we have to bear with the darker version of the movie. Overall, this is a worth while movie to watch.

If you really want to go deeeeeeep into details about the entire series, do go visit the following web site, but be warned, it will spoil the fun of the movie. Watch the movie first then go to this web page to see how much you actually understood the entire series. http://www.therossman.com/

This ... was a GOOD movie. Personally, I found it gave the TV series a much more complete conclusion. I don't see it as an alternate "ending" to Evangelion as some people do, just a replay of the events leading up to the end of the TV series that they couldn't fit in the series. Here's the point where I harp on the show some. Clarity, this movie is VERY lacking in clarity.. You can compare it to walking into the middle of a movie like Pulp Fiction, or 12 Monkeys. Missing the begining definately robs you of any knoledge of what the heck's going on. One thing I really did like about the End of Evangelion were the Religious refrences.. I doubt anyone, except the creators/few who dedicated webpages to it, realize just how much Religous refrences put into the series besides the stuff they told you about. (For example, the entry point of the plugs on the Evas) Now, as for Art, this movie really did a number with the art. It was beautiful, wonderful, awesome, words can't describe the detail. The style it was presented in was very artsy, it allowed you to get a glimpse of what Third Impact really meant. I scored the character development so high for several reasons as well, you see the characters reach a conclusion about themselves, explore their psyche, and come out with a better perspective about the reality they've created for themselves. In short, if you felt at all ripped off by the TV series, this movie will put it all into perspective and leave you satisfied, except for the fact that you're still left guessing. I gave it an 8.
