REVIEW of:
 Kodomo no Omocha (Child's Toy)

Meet Kurata Sana. Sana is just your average young schoolgirl with her own TV show, a mortal enemy, a mother who has a squirrel living in her hair, and a mid 20s boyfriend/manager/pimp who isn’t allowed to take off his sunglasses. Well, perhaps average wasn’t quite the right word....

Sana’s biggest problem is a boy named Hayama Akito. Akito is blackmailing the teacher so he and his friends can do whatever they want. Sana decides to take matters into her own hands to reclaim the classroom, but how can you defeat someone who shows no emotion whatsoever? If only Sana could find out his weakness she might have a chance.

Kodomo no Omocha is a continuing plot TV series style anime. It transitions back and forth smoothly between comedy, romance, and drama, and will appeal to fans of those genres.    - Toranpu

Comments Yes folks, you read that right. A 10. A perfect score. I've thought this over long and hard, and against criticism from MANY of my fellow KIDS members, I went ahead and gave a perfect score. And in my opinion, Kodomo WELL deserved it! The first time I laid eyes on Kodomo no Omocha, I let out a tremendous groan and thought "oh NO, not another one of THOSE animes...", meaning in particular kiddie-type cutsie shows (ie. I'll Make a Habit of It, etc.) But excellence works it's magic quickly, and within the first five minutes of Kodomo, I laughed. And I laughed some more. And I began to think that maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all... by the end of the first episode, I couldn't wait to see the next! By the end of the fourth episode, I was hooked... and by the episode 10 or so, I knew I was witnessing perfection. Okay, so what's the big deal about? First of all, Kodomo is downright HILARIOUS. And I mean rolling on the floor, tummy-burning hilarious. I have laughed so hard I'd cry, and more than once! (Note: for even more hilarity, make sure to watch Kodomo with a bunch of friends!) The show itself can best be described like the main character... spastic. The show is just so --- spastic! A mother who has a squirrel living on her head?? What IS that anyway? So much of the show seems to be flat out silliness that you could almost dismiss Kodomo as a "slapstick comedy" and walk away... until you get into it. The more you watch, the more you realize there is a plot behind all this. And once you see it, you see the many many subplots that follow. And then a whole new world opens up. Rivals, friends, perverts, nerds, pimps, weirdos, and lost loves... expect to see it all in Kodomo. Another great word to describe Kodomo is "unexpected." Soooo many times the weirdest, most totally unexpected things happen! But unlike many other anime's, it's not totally unBELIEVABLE, only totally unEXPECTED. But there is indeed a plot which gets deeper as the series progesses. The characters are so very well developed, each with their own identity that fits them all so well... Despite the onslaught of hilarity, there are many serious and dramatic parts that arise, each with deep, REAL emotions... What else can I say but WOW!

Perhaps Kodomo is an acquired taste, and perhaps not everyone will like it. I, however, enjoyed it immensely and can honestly say you have not experienced anime if you haven't at least tested Kodomo.
I agree with Kiwi wholeheartedly on this one. The first time I saw Kodomo was in the anime room of a role playing convention. The first episode was good enough to watch the second, the second good enough to stay for the third, and before I knew it I had seen the first 20 episodes. I had the theme song (which is a good song, I might add) stuck in myhead for the better part of a month.

Kiwi covered the comedy aspect perfectly but his review underplays the dramatic aspect of this series. The characters are all human beings, with ups and downs, happy times and painful times. Yes, there were times that I laughed so hard that I was crying. However, there were also times that I felt so sorry for the characters that I shed a few tears for them. The transitions from silly to serious are incredibly smooth and slow building. Kodomo doesn’t just jerk you from one extreme to the other (Anyone who has seen Fushigi Yugi understands how blindsiding mood swings can make you feel).

One last thing I have to say is to watch out for when Sana breaks out her handheld replay machine and starts singing. The first time I heard her sing I literally fell out of my chair laughing. Her songs alone will make you want to watch the next episode.

If I was allowed to vote higher than 10 I would. EVERYONE should see this series.

i am definately a kodocha fan! this is an insane little series that everyone should see.

one day, i decided to give this series a try, out of boredom. i ordered the first fansub, but, being the impatient person i am, downloaded the first episode from a website. i was immediately drawn the show- it's fast pace, it's side-splitting humor. I NEEDED MORE!i quickly downloaded several more episodes.

i gave the artistry a seven because of the uniqueness of the art. it may not be beautifully drawn, and the coloring make not steal your breath away, but with a show like this, who cares about a silly thing such as beautiful art? instead, it steals your breath away from laughing so much. kodocha's style creates many hilarious facial expressions and body poses which add to its humor and charm.

the character development deserves more than a ten! sana and hayama are especially well-done. the way they both fight and then cooperate together is truly fun to watch! i also believe they'd make a good couple. even the minor characters are developed well. they all interact together in the stunning way of an anime masterpiece, and really add the the show.

i gave clarity an eight because it might be unclear to some, considering how random it can be (and usually is). the plot is easily deciphered, but it can get slightly side-tracked with all the humorous antics going on.

the plot, as with the character development, deserves higher than a ten. it has lots of guffaw-worthy humor...
