REVIEW of:
 Slayers Try

Slayers Try      A thousand years ago, the demon Phibrizo cursed the country with a magical barrier which prevented anything from entering or leaving. Phibrizo was recently defeated by a genius sorceress and since then a pillar of light has appeared on the horizon. Now that the barrier is gone many parties have interests in what is outside of the country. Among them is Lina, who recieves a letter requesting her assistance, Zelgadis, still searching for a cure from his curse, and a few others. What is to come is an adventure in a new world.

Slayers TRY is the third series in the popular Slayers series following the furthering exploits of Lina, Gourry and the gang. Slayers TRY is a 26 episode series.       - Daigoji Gai

Comments Slayers fans rejoice, here is yet another year of Slayers TV episodes for you to relish! When I was introduced to Slayers, it was with the first two movies (Perfect and Return), so I was a bit disappointed when I later saw the original Slayers TV series. Not that it was bad, but the movies were just that much better. Well, things have changed since back then, and Slayers Try makes up for what Slayers TV lost, and I must agree with Daigoji-san on many accouts: I, too, was very pleased with the first couple episodes, as they were hilarious and I laughed until I cried! It's worth watching JUST for those moments itself! But, as Daigoji-san mentioned, it just kind of dies about halfway through. Maybe "dies" is too harsh a word, but it didn't live up to the potential it showed in the first few episodes. As much as I still enjoy our old faves: Lina, Gourry, Zel, and Amelia, I must say my favorite character of Try is Filia. Daigoji-san said it best when he said she's quite "Kawaii" -- I agree! =) (In fact, I have a Limited Edition Filia Ul-Kopt figure from Bandai staring at me as we speak, er, type...) Even though Try is much improved over the original TV series, in my honest opinion, Try would be most entertaining for those new to the Slayers universe, whereas those who have seen the movies already may be a bit disappointed once those really cool first few episodes are over. =) The third season of Slayers is a definate improvement in the art and style of the show. The animation was fluid and the characters were drawn really well. The first two episodes are among the funniest I've ever seen. TRY grabs your attention in the begining with it's humorous character situations. Unfortunately, afterwards it kind of sputters and focuses more on revenge and lost a little of my interest. Character development is pretty minimal due to the fact that most of the heros have been introduced a long time ago. The "new guy" Phylia (Filia depending on fansubber) is introduced in an interesting way and she's quite "Kawaii". The development of the enemies is rather poor however and that brought me down about the show. But if you are a fan of the series, or even if you aren't I highly recommend it. I give it Gekigan-THUMBSUP!!!

Overall: 7 (Very Entertaining)
Another installment to the ever expanding Slayers-verse left me wanting more. The series just keeps making leaps in bounds in the way of plot, style, art, and comedy. When viewed as a standalone series, it can be a little confusing at times. Considering that there were 52 episodes before Slayers TRY even came around, it's rightfully so. The only gripe that I have about the series that it is stuck in a static senario. The characters fight evil, throw in wisecracks, and while this isin't a bad thing, you can't see the characters grow out of this. The same goes for all TV series. A few things that I would really enjoy seeing out of the series is a Lina/Gourry hookup, but being that something bad happens or someone that is trying to take over the world/make it go boom shows up, they never get a chance to. That, and you don't really find out all that much about the character's pasts. Even so, the series continues to entertain and keeps getting better with each new installment. I recomend this series to any fan of comedy, breast-size joke lovers, and fans of shows that break the tension with comedy, but still retain the ability to keep you on the edge of your seat. I gave a technical overall rating of 6, but based on sheer enjoyment, it would have a 7+ or an 8.
