REVIEW of:
 Birdy the Mighty (Tetsuwan Birdy)

Birdy the Mighty (Tetsuwan Birdy)      As an alien criminal flees across the galaxy and tries to hide on Earth, the galactic police officer Birdy Altirra is sent to retrieve her. While attempting to arrest one of the alien's sidekicks, however, she accidentally kills an innocent human teenager, Tsutomu. A police officer is sworn to protect the innocent, not KILL them! With this in mind, Birdy "merges" with Tsutomu in one heck of a magic trick! The major problem here is... Tsutomu is a teenage BOY! Now Birdy must share his body with him as she tries to arrest the alien scum, while Tsutomu tries to keep what little control he can over his "own" body. Packed with humor and a lot of stubborn wills, Birdy the Mighty is definitely not a dull, confusing anime (no matter how dull or confusing my little description may be... heh.) The action is well done, yet not over done, and the characters are a pleasure to watch. Based on the Japanese Manga, Birdy the Mighty is currently composed of only 4 OVA episodes, the first of which is 45 minutes and the remainder of which are 30 minutes each. The end is left semi-open, and I have my fingers crossed hoping for a sequel...    - Kiwi

Comments Although this was one of the first animes I ever saw, I still think it is one of my favorites! The plot, while not completely original, is at least well done and refreshing. As with most anime, Birdy the Mighty has its moments of humor, though for the most part the emphasis lies on action and suspense. The maniacal plot(s) of the evil Crystella Ruby unfold as the OVA series unfolds, as does Birdy's personal involvement in her assignment. I found that the characters, especially Tsutomu and Birdy, played off each other well, and some of the situations that they get each other into are priceless (as in the time that Birdy forces Tsutomu to hug the girl he likes, which causes Tsutomu to say "What do you think you are doing, idiot!" to Birdy, though its overheard and misinterpreted by the girl...) Still, it's the action that dominates this series, and the action is well done and not overly hyped or dramatized... in other words, it's very believeable. I still think this is a must see, especially for SciFi fans!

Note: Kiwi will not comment on the rumor that one of the the reasons he gave "Birdy the Mighty" such a high score was because he finds Birdy "hecka cute!" <smile>

Birdy the Mighty is definitely is ranked up on my list of favorite anime. The entire series is shaded darker to successfully create a definite dark/mysterious mood. If you want a bright cheerful anime then I would recommend another series. But, if you want a dark thought provoking series then Birdy the Mighty is a great choice. I mean what series starts off with the main character dying in the beginning! Characters are developed quite well, although there is still so much to learn by the end. I loved the duality of personalities too... very unique and well played out. Naturally, the only major drawback to this series (as well as Mahou Tsukai Tai!) is the length. I wanted to see some kind of resolution, but noooo.... they just leave us hanging. Right when the plot is developed where you think we might find everything out. Oh well, guess that means we'll just have to wait for the sequel (I hope!).

Note: Ahem... I wonder who mentioned the correlation between Birdy's looks and the show... hmmmmm....
