REVIEW of:
 Hyper Police

Hyper Police      Based on the manga of the same name, Hyper Police follows young bounty hunter Natsuki-chan as she tries to make a living in this half-human, half-animal world. Natsuki-chan is half cat and half human, with special magical powers to boot! Her swordsmanship is extraordinary, and has saved her life (and her partners') more than once. This is an era of animals, an era where animals share the same repsonsibilities and concerns as humans, an era where animals and humans coexist. Though many of the animal-people have incorporated themselves into the way of the world well, others have turned to crime, and that is where Natsuki and her fellow company members come in. You see, Natsuki-chan is a bounty hunter, the only type of law enforcement left after the deregulation of Government's police force. Together with Batanen-sempai and Sakura, Natsuki tries to set the world right, or at least remember her lines!! "You have the right to remain silent... anything said can... cann... can...???" Hyper Police aired 1997 in Japan and lasted the full year (25 episodes).         - Kiwi

Comments When paired with the catchy music and witty dialog, the action in Hyper Police is both exciting and fun. The characters are great to watch, especially Natsuki-chan, who is sincere, naive, dedicated, and cute. Though characterization is a bit "stocky" (ie: generic), the characters do fit the plot well and help to move the storyline along. As with the majority of anime, you can't watch long without laughing at the many humorous parts of the series, especially when Natsuki tries so hard... ^_^   Overall, I say watch it if you can, and if you can't, you're losing out. =)

Addendum 01/18/01:
I originally reviewed this anime after only watching the first two tapes, but I've just spent some inhuman amount of time watching the entire series, start to finish, this morning/afternoon/evening, so I thought I'd add a little something. Yes, all the humor, suspense, drama, and excitement is still there, but once you get into the later episodes, you get something more... you get to *know* the characters *really well*. My particular favorite is episode 18, which explores (in a little more depth) the relationship between Batanen-senpai and Natsuki-chan. I find it very touching and very *real* and it shows how much genuine sincerity and integrity Batanen has. I also think that Tommy-kun and Peau-sama make the most awesomely cutest couple (really, they do!) and I was disappointed to find that neither the Batanen/Natsuki or Tommy/Peau relationships (Tommy, you gotta dump Fonne... please!) weren't more fully explored and developed (besides eps 18 & 22). But the later episodes, in general, definitely have more character in them... Personalities show through and move the story, rather than the other way around (always a plus in my book). I mean, even Fonne (the blonde Mad Police Corp. hunter) shows her personality, and it's a complex, real, human one at that! And aside from the characters, the storyline itself explores so many interesting and valuable themes, like racism, morality, friendship, loyalty... all the good stuff is there. The overall theme I pulled out from watching all 25 episodes is that this is your life. Make of it what you will... and, as Natsuki so very *very* astutely put it, "If I wish for too much, the happiness I have now might go away..." Finally, I just have to say this: the last episode, well, sucked. The themes and feelings explored in the last episode are all valid and important enough, but here we have another "wacky-tacky" last episode, much like the last episode of Video Girl Ai. Personally I would have much preferred just a simple realization on Natsuki's part regarding her relationship with Batanen. To me, the last episode just seems to be trying to close everything up all at once with some outside "glue" (which I suppose it was, since the show was being cancelled for the next year) and it just doesn't work as well as it could. But overall, I say Hyper Police is a must see, though you may not want to sit through all 25 episodes straight like me! ^_^

I was surprised by this series, I wasn't expecting much but it hit my "like" bone. The characters themselves are quite humorous and the interaction between them is even better. The art was pretty good and moved the way I like (flowing animation is good). The concept of the show isn't a bad one and was put across pretty well in the characters and situations that they get into. It action sequences were entertaining and didn't bring down the series as they sometimes do in others. Overall this isn't too bad, you might want to check it out.
