REVIEW of:
Mahou Tsukai Tai! (Magic Users Club)

Mahou Tsukai Tai!      Some time in the near future a huge alien cylindrical bell begins its descent toward earth. All the combined forces of the United Nations are powerless against this technologically advanced civilization. Yet, after the destruction of the UN forces, the giant bell merely lands in the middle of the ocean near Tokyo city. Time passes since this occurrence and everyone seems to accept the bell as a fact of life. Every now and then there are robots that roam around the city, but no one pays attention to them anymore and furthermore they even obey all the laws. Even traffic signals!!! What exactly is the intention of the mysterious bell and can anyone stop whatever it is that the aliens are up to??? Of course its all up to the Kitanohashi High School Magic Users Club. Not much of a club since the membership comprises only of 5 people. Yet, the sworn goal of the club though is to rid the world of the evil bell. There is the leader Takeo Takakura who is a pervert, there is Ayanojou Aburatsubo who is gay and likes Takeo, there is Akane Aikawa the girl that all the guys of the city drool over, there is Nanaka Nakatomi the tomboyish girl who likes Aburatsubo, and finally there is the insecure heroine Sae Sawanoguchi and her mysterious little doll Jeff-kun. So what does this all add up to? A ton of wacky and hilarious moments! Magic Users Club is only a 6 part OVA.                        - Akito

Comments At the risk of upsetting Akito-san (which I'd never never NEVER want to do.. ahem), I have to say that Mahou Tsukai Tai (with the exception of one episode) did not move me much at all. Not that it wasn't funny at times, entertaining throughout, and somewhat original... but I felt it just lacked something. For five of the six episodes, I found the main character, Sae, to be just downright annoying. Over and over again, we hear her speech about trying her hardest and "I'm really going to do it this time!" and it just plain got to me. The group of characters is your usual ensemble, nothing new, but not poorly done. The one saving grace of the series was, in my opinion, episode 5, an all-around superbly done episode. It is the only episode in which I found myself feeling for the characters, especially Nanaka. Despite this somewhat downplayed review, Mahou Tsukai Tai is in no way a waste of time, as my score indicates (remember, 5 is an AVERAGE show, NOT a BAD one!) It was difficult for me to give Mahou a five because the fifth episode was so good. But overall, the anime was nothing special. The art was similar to other animation and wasn't especially eye catching. Likewise, the character development was only average. If you are willing to watch four average episodes in order to make the fifth episode, then I suggest watching Mahou.  I really enjoyed Mahou Tsukai Tai (heck I couldn't stop laughing 3/4 of the time). The drawing renditions were beautifully done and the storyline was unique. Furthermore, the development of the characters deserved applause. Witnessing the young Sae mature from a insecure little girl to a responsible young adult (err.. sort of) is great! Also, the manner in which each character deals with their love life is refreshing and funny. Of course we can kind of predict what will happen at the end of the story, but we regardless want to see it with our own eyes. The only thing I found disappointing was that the series was only 6 episodes long. I wish it could have been longer, but there are always sequels ne? However, a definite must see light-hearted anime.
